Why It Matters
Professional Roof Cleaning in the Fox Valley
Those dark streaks running down so many Fox Valley roofs aren't dirt, and they aren't a sign the shingles are failing. They're algae, most often a species called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler used in many asphalt shingles, spreads with rain runoff, and builds up a dark coating that gets more noticeable every year. North-facing slopes and roofs shaded by mature trees tend to get it first.
Moss and lichen are the next stage. Moss holds water against the shingles and can work its way under the edges. Lichen bonds tightly to the surface. Both make a roof look older than it is, and a streaked, mossy roof is one of the first things buyers and neighbors notice from the street.
We Never Pressure Wash Roofs
Asphalt shingles are covered in granules that protect them from sun and weather. A pressure washer strips those granules off, and once they're gone they don't come back. That's why we never pressure wash a roof, and why you should be wary of anyone who offers to. We don't scrape or scrub shingles either.
Instead, we use soft washing: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure that kills the algae, moss and lichen at the root. The streaks lift off with the rinse. Thin moss often rinses away the same day, while heavier moss and lichen loosen and wash off with the rain over the following weeks. Killing the growth instead of blasting it off is also why a soft-washed roof stays clean longer.
Protecting Everything Below the Roof
Whatever runs off the roof ends up in your gutters, on your siding and in your landscaping. Before we start, we soak the plants and beds below the roofline with clean water. When the roof is done, we rinse the gutters, siding, walks and plants so nothing is left sitting on them. If your gutters are full of debris, add gutter cleaning to the same visit so the rinse water has somewhere to go.
